The Princess and Curdie

George MacDonald’s Timeless Sequel, Newly Illustrated

Princess Irene has moved to the king’s castle in the capital city, and Curdie has been a productive miner with his father.

One day Curdie meets Irene’s mysterious and ageless great-great-grandmother who sends him on an important mission, equipping him with a unique form of discernment and an invaluable, though at first repulsive, companion. But the old woman never told Curdie the details of the mission, only where to begin.

Led to the princess and her king-papa and joined by a menagerie of fantastical creatures, Curdie’s mission unfolds step by step. A sinister plot of the king’s formerly trusted advisors comes to light and Curdie is the only one in a position to stop it.

Inspirations for both The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings, these two stories are deeply Christian (without being overtly Christian) in the sense that they convey profound truths of the Kingdom of God in a way that even a child can understand.

First published in 1883, The Princess and Curdie—the sequel to The Princess and the Goblin—has never been out of print, and every major publisher has an edition. But now Walking Together Press has created a brand-new and beautifully illustrated edition—with fifty illustrations—for a twenty-first century audience.
